using what you have to re-pot plants

Every spring I visit a tonne of plant shops looking for the perfect plants for my room I do usually kill them off before winter but I am always dead set on finding new ones and keeping them alive. I have always wanted to house plants in vintage planters but for some reason I never knew how to pull it off, don't ask me why. Last week I had a brain wave to use cheapo plastic planters and use my vintage vessels to house the plant rather than put actual dirt and plant them in my tins which is what I was doing before. This worked out perfectly.

I really didn't do much for my aloe plant but re-pot into a bigger plastic container and find out that is fits perfectly into a tea tin I wasn't using. I placed a cheap plastic guard in the bottom so hopefully watering won't rust my tin. I think it will only look better as the plant grows.
I had originally wanted to use a glass vase for my cactus but it wasn't quite big enough so this milk glass vase came in handy. I had been spending the past few weeks searching thrift stores for planters when all I needed were the things I already owned. I am always happy to find new uses for my items. All I bought were the plants and rocks, I did some dumpster diving to find the plastic pots...

Plants are from Shelmerdines (which was heaven)

  2. That's awesome! I love the idea of using the plastic pots so the inside of your vintage tins or planters don't get used too heavily. It always kills me a little to put plants directly into my old vintage things! Let me know if you need any more plastic pots. I've got tonnes right now!

  3. Very cool ideas!!! I've seen teapots (sans lids) used to house plants as well before, but think I like your beautiful tea tin even more. Perhaps both, plus some teacups could make for a whimsical display and nod to one's passion for a good cuppa and gardening alike. :)

  4. I love the cactus in the milk glass. Very cute!

I kill EVERYTHING through neglect...even cacti...I've given up on houseplants.

Nick on the other hand has a green thumb..I'm hoping he'll help keep our garden alive one day when we plant one.
